Copyright FAQ

Most people are familiar with the copyright page in the front of books and magazines, but copyright protection extends well beyond written text to include many forms of artistic expression.

  • music recordings (also the lyrics and album cover art)
  • video recordings
  • recordings of live performances (plays, bands, dance, etc.)
  • paintings, photographs, and sculpture
  • websites (example: Armillary’s website text and graphics are copyrighted)
  • books (fiction, nonfiction, collections of short stories, poetry, etc.)
  • magazines, newspapers, online blogs, and other periodicals
  • tattoos (read a recent article on tattoo artists asserting copyright claims here)
  • and many others

Copyright registration will provide a warning to would-be infringers that they cannot use your art for any purpose without your permission. It gives you access to federal court to stop infringers and recover money damages.

Filing for copyright protection through Armillary is simple and inexpensive. If you regularly distribute or post your music, artwork, photographs, videos, or writings online, copyright registration is cheap insurance to prevent your artistic expression from being stolen by others. A sample certificate of copyright registration received in the mail from the U.S. Copyright Office can be seen here.
